Professional Silverfish Control Services
About Silverfish
Lepisma saccharina, frequently called silverfish, fishmoths, carpet sharks, or paramites, are small, wingless insects in the order Thysanura. Its common name derives from the animal's silvery light grey and blue colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements.
Silverfish are nocturnal insects that prefer dark, damp environments. They can be found in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, roof voids, and any areas with high humidity.
What Silverfish Eat
Silverfish consume matter that contains polysaccharides, such as starches and dextrin in adhesives. These include:
- Glue and book bindings
- Paper and photos
- Sugar and coffee
- Hair and dandruff
- Carpet and clothing
- Cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibres
- Dead insects and their own exuvia (moulted exoskeleton)
During famine, a silverfish may even attack leatherware and synthetic fabrics. Silverfish can live for a year or more without eating, making them particularly resilient pests.
