About Mice
A mouse (plural: mice) is a small mammal belonging to the order of rodents. The best known mouse species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). It is also a popular pet. In some places, certain kinds of field mice are also common.
The American White-footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) and the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), as well as other common species of mouse-like rodents around the world, also sometimes live in houses. These, however, are in other genera.
Mouse Behavior and Adaptability
Cats, wild dogs, foxes, birds of prey, snakes and even certain kinds of arthropods have been known to prey heavily upon mice. Nevertheless, because of its remarkable adaptability to almost any environment, the mouse is one of the most successful mammalian genera living on Earth today.
This rodent is eaten by large birds such as hawks and eagles. They are known to invade homes for food and occasionally shelter, especially during colder months or when food sources are scarce.
Why Mice are Problematic
Mice can at times be harmful rodents, causing:
- Damage to crops and stored food
- Structural damage to buildings by gnawing
- Electrical fires from chewed wiring
- Disease transmission through parasites and feces
- Contamination of food and surfaces
Health Concerns
In North America, breathing dust that has come in contact with mouse excrements has been linked to hantavirus, which may lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). While this is less common in Australia, mice still pose significant health risks through disease transmission.
Signs of Mouse Infestation
- Small droppings (3-8mm long) along walls and in cupboards
- Scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, and cables
- Greasy smear marks along walls and skirting boards
- Nests made from shredded paper, fabric, or insulation
- Strong musky odor in enclosed areas
- Actual sightings of mice, especially at dusk or dawn
Our Mouse Control Process
Natraspray's comprehensive mouse control includes:
- Thorough inspection to identify entry points and activity areas
- Strategic placement of bait stations and traps
- Use of professional-grade rodenticides where appropriate
- Identification of nesting and harbourage sites
- Recommendations for exclusion and proofing
- Follow-up inspections to ensure complete control
Prevention Tips
- Seal all holes and gaps larger than 6mm (mice can squeeze through tiny openings)
- Install door sweeps and seal gaps under doors
- Store all food in sealed containers
- Keep kitchen and dining areas clean and free of crumbs
- Remove clutter that can provide nesting sites
- Keep garbage bins sealed and clean
- Seal around pipes and cables entering buildings
- Store pet food in sealed containers
- Trim vegetation away from building perimeter
Why Professional Control Matters
Mice reproduce rapidly - a single pair can produce 5-10 litters per year with 5-6 young per litter. This means a small mouse problem can quickly become a major infestation. Professional control ensures:
- Complete elimination of the infestation
- Safe use of control products
- Proper identification of entry points
- Long-term prevention strategies
